Planting Season and my Creative Side!

So Planting season in not only here but it's moving along fast!
I only have Sat nites and Sundays to get out into the yard and this year it has been proven once again to be difficult...............
Between my Dad, graduations, and the weather it's not been so easy to get out and get planting!

But I have begun none the less!  A few weeks ago between runs to the hospital to visit Dad I got Italian Squash (also know as Koosa to us), cucumber, string beans, and scallion seeds into the first patch to be planted!  they are coming alone very nicely. here are some Photos taken this past Monday morning!
I will take more next week as they grow bigger and I can already see some flowers forming on the beans! there is also five rows of scallions in this patch. I will be putting up stakes and ropes to train the cucs to grow up and not on the ground.
all the seeds for the beans seem to have sprouted! but they don't look crowded at all!  I will have to thin and transplant the squash and cucs this weekend too.  I will also be building up the soil around them to make the planting stronger. adding coffee grounds and some Epsom salts will be the final thing for the weekend.
A couple of weekends ago I built these really great planters from stair steps and window boxes! that really fueled my creative side!Stair threads, boards and planter combined to make two sets of planters for my carrots, parsley, lettuce, radishes and spinach.  the seeds have all sprouted and are coming along nicely!
Lettuce in the window planter

Radishes need to be thinned I think!
More to get accomplished this weekend coming!  Tomatoes, peppers and eggplants need to be purchased and planted!  More pictures to follow!

Did you see the bed frame in one of the above pictures?  watch what that will become on July 4th weekend!

  1. The garden is looking good! I love those planters you made- they look really good! I'm fully immersed in the garden now, with everything really taking off. Just harvested the first few zucchini, and I have a feeling I'll be getting a lot more veggies real soon. Thanks for sharing your garden adventures ;)

    1. Michelle I am always in awe of your wonderful garden! and you get a huge yield from it! unfortunately I can only be a weekend gardener! but everything I get out of it gets used.......we freeze the extras and sometimes give away a lot too!

  2. WOW, I think this looks great Karen. We got in gear this year but only are doing tomatoes. I forgot how much fun container gardening can be. I love the one you built. Happy growing!

  3. I've seen the stair tread garden idea before on pinterest. It sounds like it's really not all that hard to put together? I would have jumped at that idea back when I was renting.

I hope the garden goes well for you. I've gotten 4 zucchini, 2-3 strawberries, and a few pints of berries out of mine so far. I'm looking forward to getting more - I've got 2 green tomatoes on the plants and some basil seedlings that are getting bigger.

What makes Italian squash different than other types of squash? Is it a summer squash or a winter squash?

    1. Hi Michelle! The planter set was super easy to put together! I pre drilled all the holes in the treads, and the uprights. then I bolted them together, drilled drainage holes in the planters, screwed them to the stair treads, added a back brace to the top of the planter and it was done. the two took less then an hour to put together once the holes were drilled!
Italian squash produce a short, fat squash with a thinner neck, we used it to make stuffed squash............it is also a little on the sweeter side.
